Vicki Moore Named Patriot League Women's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Navy's Vicki Moore, Patriot League Women's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year

May 9, 2008

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy's Vicki Moore (Sr./Burke, Va.) has been recognized as the 2008 Patriot League Women's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced it on Thursday. Earlier this year, Moore was named the league's women's indoor scholar-athlete of the year.

Moore is the second Navy women's outdoor track & field member to earn the award, as recent graduate Kirsten Andrews was a two-time selection in 2006 and '07. Moore also becomes the second Navy and sixth Patriot League women's track & field competitor to claim indoor and outdoor scholar-athlete-of-the-year accolades in the same year. She joins the elite list with Andrews, Keira Carlstrom (American - 2004), Julie Sweitzer (Bucknell - 1999), Lauren Gubicza (Fordham - 1992 and '93) and Susan Jindra (Lehigh - 1991).

In the classroom, Moore ranks at the top of her class of 1,064 midshipmen with a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average over her first-seven semesters in Annapolis. The information technology major also ranks first in her class in Overall Order of Merit, which is a combination of Academic Order of Merit and Military Order of Merit, both of which she is at the top of her class in ranking. She has been recognized on the Superintendent's List in each of her seven semesters, where she has produced a flawless 4.00 grade-point average.

Last week, Moore was named one 29 female winter-sports recipients of the 2007-08 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and are in their final year of intercollegiate athletic competition. Following graduation in two weeks, she will study in international relations in Dublin, Ireland.

In February, Moore was also selected to the USA Today All-USA College Academic Second-Team for her work in creating a user-friendly database for NATO M&I request summaries.

While she has succeeded in her academic endeavors, Moore has also served as one of Navy's top middle distance runners. This spring, she boasted the team's top times in the 800-meter run (2:14.74) and the 1,500-meter run (4:43.82). She also served as the anchor leg on the 4x800-meter relay that produced an ECAC qualifying time of 9:14.89 in the Patriot League Championship last weekend in Annapolis. The Navy senior also participated in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter events at the outdoor league championship, placing ninth and 13th, respectively.

During her athletic career, Moore has won an event at the Patriot League Championship five times and has placed second on three other occasions.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.

The Midshipmen will partake in the ECAC Championship on the campus of Princeton University on May 16-18.
