Navy Crew

Oct. 17, 2005

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Navy crew teams swept the three varsity eight races at the Navy Day Regatta, held Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. This marks the third-straight year in which Navy has won each of the three varsity eight races at the regatta.

In the varsity heavyweight race, Navy completed the 2.5-mile course in a time of 12:35.30 to top Penn by just over one second (12:36.70). Navy's lightweight team placed first (12:48.10), third (13:07.00) and fifth (13:19.70) in the college eight race, with Navy's top boat defeating second-place Georgetown by seven seconds. In the women's college eight race, Navy posted a time of 14:27.90 to finish 13 seconds in front of second-place Rutgers.

In addition to the varsity eight victories, the three Navy teams also combined to win five other races on the day, winning the heavyweight college eight and club four races, the lightweight club eight and freshman eight races and the women's college junior varsity eight race

Rounding out the Navy results on the day were a second-place finish in the lightweight college four race, a fourth-place showing in the heavyweight college four race and an eighth-place finish in the women's college novice eight race.

"Overall, placing our three varsity boats in the top five of the lightweight eight race shows our depth," said Navy lightweight head coach Rob Friedrich.

"It was a great day for us," said Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes. "I am very happy with the results of our second varsity boat."

Each of the three Navy teams will be sending boats to Sunday's Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
