Navy Tennis Impressive In Pair of Wins on Saturday

Brandon Carter led the Mids to a sweep of George Washington and Villanova on Saturday.

Feb. 4, 2006

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team posted strong performances in cruising to a pair of victories over George Washington and Villanova at the Severn Valley Racquet Club. In the first meet of the day, Navy defeated George Washington, 5-2, and then cruised past Villanova, 5-0, in the nightcap. The wins move Navy's record to 4-1 overall on the young season.

"We played very well today, especially against George Washington," said Navy head coach John Officer. "George Washington had beaten us the last three years. We won all three doubles matches and all three teams played great. Nate Nelms (St. Mary's, Ga.) avenged a loss from the fall season today and played very well at No. 1 singles. It was a great effort all the way around."

Nelms win over Mustafa Genscoy gave Navy a much-needed boost. Nelms defeated Genscoy, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, to run his spring record to 2-1 and 11-7 overall. Also victorious in singles play was Adrian Lai (Tucson, Ariz) at No. 3, Brandon Carter (West Chester, Pa.) at No. 4 and Johnny Waters (Omaha, Neb.) at No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, Navy swept all three matches, highlighted by the No. 3 doubles team of Jason Hill (Atlanta, Ga.) and Waters' 8-2 victory. Nelms and Carter won at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, and Stanley Kahl (Richland, Pa.) and Lai teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-6 victory.

In Navy's 5-0 win over Villanova, Navy won all four singles matches, then added the doubles point for the sweep.

"We didn't lose a set against Villanova and looked pretty strong," said Officer. "We subbed in doubles play and Alex James (Visalia, Calif.) and Kyle Jones (Canton, Ohio) played well.

"This was an important weekend for us and we are very pleased with the way we played," added Officer. "We played well and had a great week of practice to prepare us for the weekend. Hopefully, we can have another good week and get ready for next weekend."

The Mids will host Richmond and UNC-Greensboro next weekend on Saturday and Sunday at noon, respectively.
