Q: I was wondering about the status of two of my classmates: Billy Hurley and John Skaggs. Will Billy continue to be given the opportunity to play, and will John be given the chance any time soon? Iım sure that you know that both of these gentlemen were model midshipmen and would serve as excellent representatives of our institution. Thank you very much for your time and efforts. - asked by: ENS Kevin Barrett 04 -
A: Currently both are serving in the Fleet, and Iım not aware of any interest by John Skaggs other than fulfilling his five-year commitment to the Navy. John was a fantastic punter for us and might have had some NFL potential, however, it appears that he has focused his ambitions on succeeding in the service.
Regarding Billy, my understanding is a business plan is being put together that will be submitted to the Secretary of the Navy for his consideration of relieving Billy of his active obligation, to be supplemented by a number of years in the Reserves. There is a provision that allows very talented sailors to serve two years and then fulfill the balance of their commitment through the Reserves. If the Secretary of the Navy approves Billyıs petition, heıd be available to compete on the PGA circuit while meeting a six-year Reserve requirement to the Navy. I know Billyıs had some ups and downs lately regarding his golf game, but nevertheless, we all know heıs a tremendous talent and clearly one of the greatest golfers ever to wear the Blue and Gold.

Q: My 12-year-old wants to know how Roger Staubach, David Robinson and other stars who attended the Naval Academy, did their 5 years of service and play pro ball? - asked by: K. Joseph -
A: Roger served his full commitment, which I believe was four years, and David got out a couple of years early, but served his remaining time in the Reserves.
