Hubbard Hall - Rowing

Located on Dorsey Creek just a few hundred yards from the Severn River, construction of "The Boathouse" was completed in 1930 and was designed to accommodate Navy's lone men's rowing team of 40 members. Since then, however, an additional two teams have been added to the program and the number of athletes competing has increased five-fold to its present day 200 rowers.

The three-story building has undergone several remodeling efforts over the years, most recently in 1993 thanks to funding provided by Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher. The planned renovation project will only enhance the state-of-the-art Fisher Rowing Center as one of the finest collegiate rowing facilities in the country.

Current features of the building include ...

  • bays and storage racks for 28 eight-oared shells, plus eight four-oared and five pairs boats,
  • a machine and wood shop where Navy's full-time boatman works to keep the shells in racing form,
  • a 3,500-square foot weight room,
  • a 10-person rowing tank,
  • an exercise and training room with 30 ergometers,
  • a third-floor teaching classroom with video equipment,
  • the King Room, a paneled 1,600-square foot lounge,
  • and a dining facility which includes access to a balcony overlooking the wharf area.

While the interior size of Hubbard Hall will remain the same, the renovation will make better use of the building's space for all three programs. The plans for the renovation include, and are not limited to ...

  • locker and shower rooms for all three teams,
  • training areas to allow all three programs simultaneous use of exercise equipment and ergometers,
  • a rowing tank with the capacity to handle 16 rowers with stroke counts comparable to race conditions,
  • increased storage and repair space for boats and all equipment,
  • meeting rooms large enough for an entire team,
  • and office space for the three coaching staffs.

The exterior of the building includes a large concrete apron facing the water and three 85-foot double-access docks for launch and recovery of the shells. The expansion of this existing wharf area is also part of the renovation plans.
